Taerra Pence is a native of Richmond, Virginia. The second of eight children born to a rather eclectically talented family, all of whom sing. From a young age, she sang in church choirs, school choirs, Christmas Pageants, musicals, everything that was available. As an undergraduate, Taerra studied music, and participated in musical productions and choirs. She sang the role of Laetitia in Menotti's The old maid and the Thief, and sang several scenes programs. She also played Rapunzel in Into the woods, and Frumah Sarah in Fiddler on the roof.
Taerra went on to pursue her Master's degree at Brigham Young University. While there, she sang Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann and participated in Opera Scenes. She taught group voice classes and private voice lessons. When she completed her degree, she served an 18 month mission for her church, then returned home and took a job at Southern Virginia University as an adjunct instructor teaching voice, music literature, and music fundamentals courses. Taerra also taught privately and sang in the chorus and prepared cover roles for Opera Roanoke.
In 2016 Taerra moved to NYC to continue her opera career. In November 2017, she performed the role of Violetta in Regina Opera's production of La Traviata. She will be performing the role of Kate Pinkerton in their spring production of Madam Butterfly.
